Antique Collapsible Candle Lantern — Alpine, c. 1900
NB: A decorative object - use with an LED flameless candle for preservation and safety. Chain not included.
"A rare and intimate artefact, carrying both the memory of light and the stillness that follows it."
This antique lantern originates from the Alpine regions of Central Europe, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century; a time when light itself was something carefully made, carried, and tended to.
Constructed with a concertina-folding body of treated linen, the lantern was designed to collapse for travel and expand when hung. The material bears the gentle irregularities of handwork, its woven structure still visible, its surface subtly aged by time. The metal top showcases a hand-engraved and decorative fret work. A small access lid reveals the original candle chamber and holder within, where traces of soot remain: a quiet record of past use.
Beautifully aged, with a soft patina across both textile and metal. The fabric shows time-worn creasing and tonal variation, consistent with age and use, while remaining structurally intact. The metal surfaces carry natural oxidation.
Size approximately 220mm diameter x 500mm H (110mm collapsed height)
Weight approximately 0.796 kg

Many of our artefacts are antique, vintage, handmade, or naturally aged objects, and signs of wear, patina, tonal variation, and irregularity are considered part of their character and history. We recommend handling each piece with care and displaying it away from prolonged direct sunlight, excessive moisture, or extreme temperature changes. To clean, gently dust using a soft dry cloth or brush. Avoid abrasive materials, harsh chemicals, or excessive water unless otherwise stated within the individual product description. Some decorative objects may not be intended for functional use and are offered as sculptural or collectible pieces to be appreciated for their form, materiality, and presence.
Each artefact is carefully prepared and packed by hand before dispatch. Smaller pieces are typically shipped within 2-4 working days via tracked delivery. Larger, heavier, or more fragile objects may require a specialist courier service to ensure safe arrival. Where this applies, we will contact you directly to arrange the most appropriate delivery method for your piece. Tracking information will be provided once your order has been dispatched.
YOUR QUESTIONS
Not always. Our collection includes a mix of antique, vintage, and contemporary pieces, all chosen for their presence, materiality, and character.
Some pieces are functional, while others are purely decorative or sculptural. Each product page will specify if an item is suitable for practical use.
Each object is unique. Variations in tone, texture, patina, and form are natural and to be expected.
We source each piece thoughtfully and in small quantities, working with trusted suppliers, collectors, and makers who share our appreciation for craftsmanship, materiality, and enduring design. Every object is selected individually for its quality, character, and uniqueness, and photographed carefully to reflect its true appearance as accurately as possible. Due to the age, handmade nature, or natural materials of many of our artefacts, subtle variations in colour, texture, and finish should be expected and embraced as part of their individuality.
